Three major old growth areas exist in and around the Alberni Valley.
McLaughlin Ridge is especially significant due to the fact that it is part of China Creek watershed, which is one of the two drinking water sources for the city of Port Alberni. It has also been designated as a Wildlife Habitat Area (Queen Charlotte Goshawk) and an Ungulate Winter Range (Black-tailed deer). It is actively being logged as of Summer 2014.
Mount Horne is positioned just behind Cathedral Grove, is also designated as a Wildlife Habitat Area and an Ungulate Winter Range and significantly increases the ecological potential of Cathedral Grove.
Juniper Ridge is located in the Ash Valley. It was an Ungulate Winter Range that was recently logged.
